Peace Man
If you grew up in the 60s or even the 70s, then you remember this hippie expression “Peace Man.” The peace symbol was often given with two vertical fingers in the shape of a V and a horizontal thumb completing the symbol. The term “peace man” didn’t mean civil peace or even shalom; it was simply a greeting of hello or goodbye. Every generation has its slang for the popular salutations of its time. Jesus, hopefully, a name everyone should know, would on occasion make his introduction with the words “peace be with you” John 20:24-28. His peace was much deeper than a simple hello or goodbye. It was a reference to the peace that we experience when we are rightly related to God. Lord, help me deepen my understanding and conviction of the peace you provide for all those who honestly seek You.
Famous hippies from the 60s and 70s are many, including Cheech and Chong, Joan Biaz, Jane Fonda, Carley Simon, Jerry Garcia, Timothy Leary, Bob Marley, Janice Joplin, Billy Jack, Neil Young, and Frank Zappa, to name a few. It was a season striving for freedom, love, peace, and an unlimited amount of drugs to aid in the quest for release from all the world calamities. It was cool to wear bellbottom jeans, tie-dye shirts, funky hats, headbands, and blue jean jackets. People everywhere wanted liberation from religious influence and the dominant conservative principles and traditions that governed society. Unfortunately, the pursuit of peace, love, and freedom from the bondage of self can only be found in a personal relationship with God. Sure we can have moments of peace, happiness, and freedom when circumstances go our way, but the only way to truly enjoy the everlasting peace, love, and freedom that Jesus spoke of and provides is through a spiritual experience and commitment to live along spiritual lines. Father God, help me experience the peace, love, and freedom that only You can provide. Grant me the honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness to experience Your life-changing presence for my life.
Shalom,
HALO
