“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”
~
As children, we fear the dark, but there is a cosmic shift from being afraid of the dark to become frightened of the light that takes place as we grow older. Are there still some adults fearful of the dark, of course, but as Plato elegantly shared, “the real tragedy is when humans are afraid of the light.” What does that even mean? It means the light represents the Creator of the universe; the light, my friend, is God. We live in a dark world, but there are cracks, which is how the light gets in. Despite the darkness in our soul, there is always a crack in our shell in which light creeps through. This light is the prevenient grace of God pursuing a relationship with us, despite our rebellious ways.
I call this the (cockroach philosophy) because cockroaches love the dark and hate the light. Jesus teaches us this truth in (John 3:19-21 – CEB): 19 “This is the basis for judgment: The light came into the world, and people loved darkness more than the light, for their actions are evil. 20 All who do wicked things hate the light and don’t come to the light for fear that their actions will be exposed to the light. 21 Whoever does the truth comes to the light so that it can be seen that their actions were done in God.”
How do we lose our fear of the light?
We lose our fear of the light when the poisonous fruits of darkness become objectionable to our tastebuds, and we desire something better. Dying to self must be our first course of action; next is asking the Father of the Light for courage and willingness to step out of the dark and into the light. When we move from darkness to light, the scales of fear and delusion fall from our souls. We quickly discover that standing in the spotlight of God is where and how we become safe and protected and experience true peace and serenity, along with the countless other promises that come our way for choosing to live in God’s light.
Today is the day we must choose to quit living like cockroaches!
God of Light, thank You for being the Light of the world and the light of my life. Please remove any desire that lingers in my humanness to want to taste the fruits of darkness, and continue to grant me the faith, humility, honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness it takes to remain in the light. In Your Spirit and Name, I pray these things. May Your will not mine always materialize, now and forever. Amen.
