Tim McGraw and Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard recently released a hit song titled “Undivided.” They said, “this song is in many ways like holding a mirror.”
When they first heard the lyrics, they were immediately convicted and forced to ask themselves tough reflection questions like, “Am I thinking this way? Am I projecting this when I’m talking to people? Am I leading toward the darkness, or am I leading to the light?” As Americans, we should all pause and internalize these questions, then pray for the willingness to make the necessary changes. We are either part of the solution or part of the problem.
The tendency for all people is to rationalize and justify their positions and actions in life. We don’t see how our stance and behavior for social justice or “make America great again” are at this stage of the “great divide” both divisive and destructive. Yet look at the evidence. Have you been swayed to change your stance by the other side in any way? Finger-pointing, name-calling, backbiting, threats, and provoking others into conflict are not part of the solution, at best they are childish and at times downright evil.
The Chorus to Undivided goes like this:
I think it’s time to come together / You and I can make a change / Maybe we can make a difference / Make the world a better place / Look around and love somebody / We’ve been hateful long enough / Let the good Lord reunite us / Until this country that we love is undivided.
Yup, you either go to church or you’re going to go to Hell / Get a job and work, or you’re going to go to jail / I just kind of wish we didn’t think like that / Why’s it gotta be all white or all black / And when we gonna learn to try on someone’s shoes sometimes (That’s right) / When we gonna start to see from someone else’s eyes.
Lord, help me see my thinking and behavior the way You see my thinking and behavior. Help me feel and react to my fellow siblings the way You would have me. Please grant me the strength to become undivided from this day forward. Amen.
