Two Kinds of Hope
In an advent devotional study titled “Almost Christmas: A Wesleyan Advent Experience,” there are two kinds of hope discussed by author Ingrid McIntyre, co-founder of Open Table Nashville:
- Almost Hope: this hope is focused only on yourself, e.g., hoping for a white Christmas; hoping I get what I want for presents; hoping myself and the people I love don’t catch COVID-19; hoping the government passes another stimulus bill so I can get some money; hoping… fill in the blank _________________.
- Altogether Hope: This kind of hope can only be experienced in the community by going out and meeting those who are hopeless where they are at and not waiting for them to come to you. This means visiting and serving the homeless, the addicted, the food pantry, those in prison, and many others in need living on the margins. Through practicing the spiritual principle of love and service to others, you will experience an altogether hope.
Lord, this Christmas season help me strive to exemplify a living hope, a lively hope, by getting out of the comfort of my home, church, job and become real hope with skin on for those who desperately need hope this holiday season.
Reflection Question: Who are you going to provide an altogether hope this year?
Wishing you an altogether hopeful experience this Christmas season,
HALO
