“There is no such thing as freedom of choice unless there is the freedom to refuse.” ~ David Hume
Every human being is born in a failed state and fatally flawed. The development of hurts, habits, and hang-ups starts immediately out of the womb. From day one of our existence, we pursue worldly things to set us free from the bondage of ourselves. This process starts and functions at a subconscious level. How we respond to the events, encounters, and seasons in our life are from this subconscious state. Our pursuit of freedom in the world comes with a hefty price tag.
David Hume is right; there is no genuine freedom in life unless we can reject the offering. Even though Hume was an agnostic and relied heavily on intellect, reason, and experience to make sense of the world, he would agree that freedom comes at a price.
God created us with free will. We can accept to live along spiritual lines or reject it altogether. The path of spirituality is the only way to freedom from the bondage of self. You will never obtain release by way of worldly vices. The world promises happiness but delivers misery. It promises life but produces death. The Spirit world offers transformation from within and never promises any material gain. Spiritual transformation illuminates the beauty inside you despite living in a fallen world. It delivers the ultimate state of freedom, meaning you can be okay when things in the world are not okay. Friends, that is true freedom, and spirituality is the only way to achieve it. What’s the cost? You must die to yourself and turn your will and life over to a power greater than yourself. True freedom requires practicing spiritual principles in all your affairs.
God of Freedom, You hold the keys to true freedom (the release from the bondage of self), and it’s available to every human being in the world. You also give us the freedom of choice, which can be viewed as the most incredible gift or the greatest curse. I am tired of paying the price for the impossible quest of obtaining freedom from worldly vices. Today, God, I turn to You and ask for the keys to Freedom that You gracefully make available to everyone. Would You please remove the defects in my character that prevent me from taking the keys to the Kingdom from Your hand, so I can enter the gates to Your Kingdom and trudge the narrow road to true Freedom, Freedom from the bondage of self and this fallen world? In Your Spirit and Name, I pray these things. May Your will not mine always materialize, now and forever. Amen.
