“I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.” ~ Susan B. Anthony
The famous theologian John Wesley argued there is no religion but social religion and no holiness but social holiness. Spirituality is a practice, not an intellectual exercise or self-centered experience. If we claim to believe in a Higher Power (God), especially a God of love, and there is no social engagement or expression of that love on our part, then it’s not spirituality; it’s nothing more than a glorified head trip. There is no spirituality but social spirituality. God’s character is centered on righteousness, justice, and peace. All three require action, action, and more action. If there is no action, then one is suffering from extreme self-centeredness and spiritual delusion.
How are you sharing spirituality with others?
In what ways do you practice your spirituality socially?
What social opportunities exist that can provide a platform for you to start living out your spirituality?
God of social spirituality, thank You for revealing what spirituality, religion, and love should look like in the world. You ask humankind to practice righteousness, justice, and peace in all of our affairs. We come before You today requesting that You remove any defects of a character that stand in the way of our usefulness to You and the people in need throughout the world. In Your Spirit and Name, we pray these things. May Your will not ours always materialize, now and forever. Amen.
