Certainty, An Enormous Price To Pay
November 22, 2020
Hello Podrishioners,
Welcome to today’s message titled “Certainty, An Enormous Price To Pay.” In today’s message, Pastor Harold Long unpacks John 20:19-29, as we conclude our message series “Finding God In Popular Culture.” Pastor Harold challenges to embrace our doubts and ties this entire message series together by contrasting certainty vs. confidence. We hope you find liberation from the idol of certainty and can go on to live out the kingdom life with a lot of confidence and not be imprisoned by protecting your embedded certainty. If you are blessed by this message, please share it with others.

Thank you for joining us today for our message titled “A Vital Sixth Sense: Experiencing A Life Of Freedom,” which is apart of our fall message series “Finding God In Popular Culture.” Today Pastor Harold unpacks Galatians 5:13-26, helping us discover what it means to develop this vital sixth sense, which is necessary for living a life of freedom. He first shows how we can find God in popular culture during the 1990s. He gives us real examples in TV, Music, and Film. The links to those videos and illustrations are below in the show notes. They were excluded from the recordings for copyright reasons. The main takeaway that Pastor Harold wants us to absorb is that by God’s grace, we were given the gift of the Holy Spirit to help manifest in each of us the gifts that God uniquely gave to each one of us. We will never be able to produce spiritual fruit in our lives without the Holy Spirit. If we fail to commit to living a life of freedom, we will never experience the kingdom of God.

Thank you for joining us today for our message titled “Lessons Of The Lost Ark.” We are in our current message series titled “Finding God In Popular Culture.” Today’s lesson focuses on the 1990s. Pastor Harold unpacks 2 Samuel 6:1-12 and helps us discover and learn the many lessons the Arc of the Covenant has to teach us as kingdom people. We look at shows, movies, and music from the 1990s to see where we can find God. We look back at the movies “Oh God” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” which you can probably tell by now is where we came up with the title for today’s message. We also preview Bob Dylan singing “Gotta Serve Somebody” while opening for the 1980 Grammy Awards, where he won his first Grammy for “Best Male Rock Vocalist.” As you explore this message series with us, we hope that you can see how the culture shifted dramatically from just after World War II to the present day. We hope you can learn how to have dialogue and relationships with people from the secular world who don’t have a relationship with God or worship and understand God different from you.

Today we continue in our fall 2020 sermon series titled “Finding God in Popular Culture.” Our message today is titled “A Simple Kind Of Faith.” During this message, Pastor Harold takes us back to the 1960s to help understand what the culture was like during the 60s’ but also to help us discover God in the Pop Culture at that time. We look at two clips during the message, one from the movie “To Kill A Mocking Bird,” and the other from a sitcom in the 60s’ called “The Andy Griffith Show.” In both clips, Pastor Harold shows us the influence scripture had on these two pieces of art. Pastor Harold also unpacks Mark 10:13-16 and helps us understand what Jesus meant when he said that “we must become simple like little children.” He then teaches us how we can return to this childlike dependence on God. Today’s message is the first for our new message series, “Finding God In Popular Culture.” Our message today is titled “God is Plural.” Pastor Harold unpacks John 15:18-27 and lays the groundwork for the rest of the series. We will time travel through the 1950s to our present time, to learn about the shift that has taken place in our culture, and why America finds itself in the shape it’s in today. We will discover what it will take to live as kingdom people in a pluralistic world. God is not dead, and God will win in the end, but Christians have a lot to learn from their past and how to carry a kingdom message into the future.
