“Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.” ~ Pablo Picasso
The comedian Steven Wright once shared how he struggled with procrastination; he said he didn’t even get a birthmark until he was eight years old. Would you consider yourself a procrastinator? If we are honest with ourselves, we all have areas of our life where we put things off for another day. We all have things we need to do for ourselves and others. These matters mostly center around the legal, financial, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual categories. It becomes overwhelming to ponder all that there is to do, and the easy play is to put it off for another day. If we only had a dollar for every time, we said, “I’ll do it tomorrow.”
There is no guarantee that we will experience another day on earth. If you knew that today was your last day on earth, what would you do differently today? Who would you talk to and why? What would you say? What tasks and affairs need to be addressed? What relationships need to be reconciled? We all have things we need to do, and we needed to do them yesterday. Take some time today to make a TO DO LIST, prioritize it, share it with an accountability partner, ask God for the willingness to complete it, and then get committed and get started. You’ll be glad you did, and you will feel refreshed and responsible once again.
God, thank You for the gift of another day of life. You know how hectic my life can be and how much I procrastinate carrying out Your will in all areas of my life. Would you please forgive me and help me to forgive myself? I humbly ask for the willingness, courage, and perseverance to become responsible in all areas of my life. Remove from my character the sloth that robs me of my desire to meet my responsibilities and receive the many promises You have in store for my life. In Your Spirit and Name, I pray these things. May Your will not mine always materialize, now and forever. Amen.
