“Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.” ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
When you stop and look at the world today, you can quickly become hopeless. How to change the world seem like an impossible task, with no satisfactory answers. Evil is everywhere you look; it’s like we live in the land of the lost. If you watch any of the zombie movies or series, e.g., The Walking Dead, it’s what it looks like in the world today. Most people struggle to survive, extract all they can from this life, obsessed with becoming famous for something and how many views or likes they received on their latest social media post. People are spiritually dead, and this number continues to grow at an alarming rate. The good news has become old news and irrelevant to most people in this postmodern world.
The Great Commission is still the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20), despite how big a mountain it is to climb. How BIG is your God? God will always move mountains, but God will always ask you to bring a shovel. Making disciples who make disciples for the transformation of the world is still the calling of every believer. Your faith will quickly fade if you don’t share your faith with others. If you have a glass of water filled to the rim, question, can you pour any more water into the glass? The answer is “yes,” but first, you must pour out what’s already in the glass. Your spiritual tank is filled by going to church, serving the Lord, and sharing your time, talent, treasure, etc. Still, once your spiritual tank is full, you must learn to pour out what’s spiritually alive inside you, or your faith will grow stale, become flat, and quickly evaporate.
To make disciples, you must first be discipled. Do you have a mentor, sponsor, accountability partner, or an accountability group? Who is discipling you? Who is walking shoulder to shoulder with you and helping you rediscover life and live into your kingdom calling? You cannot transmit something you don’t possess. Going to church once or twice a week, attending a bible study, and joining a small group is essential and necessary to grow your faith but to become a disciple, you must be discipled. If you don’t have a mentor or a sponsor, then that is your first business order. Make it a goal to ask someone to mentor you or sponsor you this week. In recovery circles, they call discipleship sponsorship, and they do it better than any fellowship on the planet. Ask someone who you respect and lives for God to be your mentor/sponsor. You will be glad you did, and it will make a BIG difference in how your life turns out and how well you live out the Great Commission.
Lord, thank You for saving me. I know my calling is to make disciples who make disciples for the transformation of the world. Please grant me the willingness, courage, and passion for living out the Great Commission, along with asking someone to mentor/sponsor me this week. In Your Spirit and Name, I pray these things. May Your will not mine, always materialize, now and forever, Amen.
